amboss magazine reviews 'Diaries from the gallows'
I have to admit, after listening to the first track I already wanted to put the album away, but right after listening to track 2 Eventide could convince me to listen to the entire album. Why? Well, because the opener is such a boring Melodic Death/Thrash song. In the second song everything is completely different, modern influences like clean vocals, a lot of variety and enthusiasm makes you listen attentively. This is how Melodic Death/Thrash Metal should sound like. Maybe the first track is left over from one of their prior demos, as the foundation of Eventide was already done back in 1998 and "Diaries from the Gallows" is the first regular album of the swedish group. While listening to the album it gets clear that this debut is not the ultimate next big thing for the metal scene, nevertheless Eventide have a very solid sound which is rarely boring. They manage to keep the listeners interest by smart song structures, constant change of tempo as well as keyboard, piano and acoustic parts. And whenever clean vocals appear the band can score. It remains to be seen if Eventide can prevail, and if they can follow the way of e.g. In Flames, musically both bands have a lot in common. We will see how this very interesting band will evolve.
